Como si se tratase de un incesante goteo, recibimos noticias de pilotos que se han incapacitado en vuelo, o que lamentablemente han fallecido volando.
Somos seres humanos y eso nos hace vulnerables. Podemos sufrir en cualquier momento una indisposición. O sufrir problemas que nos incapaciten de forma parcial o completa para la realización de nuestras tareas en vuelo.
Yo mismo he sufrido incapacitaciones parciales en vuelo por culpa de problemas en el esófago. Y como yo, muchos compañeros han sufrido algún tipo de incapacitación en vuelo por muy diversas causas.
Una incapacitación como decía, puede ser total, o parcial. Es evidente que una incapacitación total implica la pérdida de un piloto, ya sea porque ha tenido que ausentarse, porque no está consciente, etc…
La incapacitación parcial del piloto
Es la incapacitación velada o parcial la que merece más atención, puesto que un ataque de estornudos y alergia, un sangrado por la nariz, un tirón en un músculo… supone la incapacitación parcial del piloto. Y recordemos, que este tipo de cosas, puede darse en cualquier fase del vuelo.
Aunque sin lugar a dudas, las más peligrosas de todas son las incapacitaciones veladas…
Una incapacitación velada, es una indisposición sutil y a veces imperceptible del piloto. Lo más complicado de todo es identificarla, puesto que a veces no hay información evidente para detectarla. Veamos algunos ejemplos.
Un piloto está sufriendo una insuficiencia respiratoria que le lleva a estar con una pequeña hipóxia en vuelo… reacciona lentamente, puede que se muestre torpe, pero responderá con coherencia y se mostrará aparentemente atento y despierto.
Otro piloto sufre una deshidratación. Se encuentra algo aturdido, con dolor de cabeza. Pero aunque responde de forma coherente, está algo errático a la hora de pensar y realizar cálculos o procesos mentales.
Como ves, estos dos ejemplos nos muestra un piloto consciente, despierto y que aparentemente puede realizar las tareas encomendadas. Sin embargo, sus capacidades están muy mermadas y cualquier aumento del estrés o de la carga de trabajo puede hacer que colapsen.
¿Cómo reaccionar ante una incapacitación?
Si la sufrimos nosotros, debemos pedir ayuda, al compañero o a quien pueda auxiliarnos. Especialmente si comenzamos a ver deterioradas nuestras capacidades de atención. Aunque sea de forma sutil, alertar al compañero te ayudará a poder gestionar mejor la situación.
Por otro lado, si advertimos que nuestro compañero está sufriendo algún tipo de incapacitación en vuelo, lo mejor es tomar el control del avión, pedir ayuda y buscar un campo o aeropuerto cercano.
